You’ve booked your lesson, you’ve scheduled the time, and now is the time to host your first in-home guitar lesson. Don’t worry. You’re one step ahead already. Choosing to take guitar lessons already puts you on a pedestal for success as a guitar enthusiast. This is especially true if you decide to have one-on-one classes with an instructor at home, where you are comfortable with the surroundings. Not only does this speed up the learning process, it saves you time and money.  However, this means that you have a bit of work to do in preparing the lesson. Unlike a music studio where you find everything set up, here, you must prepare everything. Whether you're just starting out or exploring new musical frontiers, these steps will help you adequately prepare for your in-home private guitar lessons.

Create the Space

Having a guitar instructor come to your home is totally different from learning online. But as convenient as it may seem, it also presents you with the additional challenge of choosing the best place in your home. The good news is, you don't need a big home to find enough space for you and the instructor. Sometimes the sitting room will do, but if you have a home office, patio, balcony, or garden, it's even better. Some of the things to keep in mind when choosing the space are;

1. Accessibility

Concentration is crucial when learning guitar. Therefore, you need a space that you can easily access crucial amenities such as the bathroom or a glass of water. Constant movement to access these may disrupt the lesson and the learning process.

2. Noise Levels

The guitar is one of the most melodious musical instruments. This means that you'll want to hear each and every note to easily tell them apart. Find the quietest place in your home, away from noisy pets, children, and television or radio sets. Furthermore, keep away from places with echoes as they affect the acoustics and distorts the guitar's natural sound. Notify roommates of your lesson to avoid clashes and to give them adequate time to work around it.

3. Comfort

Every little detail matters when it comes to learning the guitar. And yes, this also applies to your sitting posture and how you hold the guitar. Your guitar instructor should be able to advise you on poses so you can know what you're comfortable with. Some people prefer to play it while sitting on a chair, on the floor, or standing. This is why choosing a space that can accommodate you, the instructor, and your equipment is important.

Preparing Equipment

Playing the guitar, like any other craft, has its own set of required equipment needed to play. The easiest way to avoid having too much equipment is to get an acoustic guitar, which means you won't need any cables or an amp. However, most people prefer to advance to an electric one after a while, and this will require having some essentials, which include;

1. The guitar, stand, tuner, capo, and picks

2. A music stand for holding chord charts and reading sheet music

3. A working amplifier

4. The necessary cables

5. Audio or video recorder if you need to record.

If you have no idea what you need, you can ask your instructor and see what they can bring to your lesson and what you need to get.

Get Ready

Besides preparing the space and your equipment, you also need your body and mind to be ready. You could start by ensuring that you practice everything from the previous lesson, so that you can move on to the next step. Additionally, you need to eat and hydrate adequately and get rid of any anxiety in case it's your first class.
